Valley School House for adult-guided, self-guided and school groups. Docents
must complete the training course on the history of the buildings and lead
a minimum of 3 tours during the season.
Fourth Grade Tours: (Indian Pioneer Days) Conduct tours of the Hahn House, the Boots and Shoes and the Fair Valley School House to introduce the fourth grade student to the story and history of the Hahn family, the August Kirchstein Boots and Shoes Shop in the temporary building and the Fair Valley School House and how their stories fit into the history of Wisconsin and life in the 1800’s. Hospitality: Act as host of social functions, special events, lectures and meetings. Assist in serving refreshments. Outreach Community Services: Speakers Bureau - Bring information to organizations such as service clubs, Chamber of Commerce, senior groups, and other interested businesses regarding Sauk City cultural heritage represented by the Historic Park. Information is also provided on events and opportunities available to the general public and to prospective Historic Park volunteers. Fundraising Activities: Planning and organizing money making activities, such as, Brat stands, Auctions, Rummage Sales, Bake Sales, Pioneer Plant Sales, etc. to raise money for various improvements to the buildings or park grounds. Building Maintenance: Can you use a paint brush or swing a hammer? We need workers who can paint railings, siding, window trim, etc. to keep our buildings looking good. If you can handle a hammer we can use you too! The porches and railings need to be repaired and anchored down. There are other small carpentry projects, such as, building a staircase to the basement of the School House, trim around the blackboards in the School House, etc. House Cleaning: We need workers
to clean each of our buildings once a month. This includes scrubbing floors,
washing windows, dusting, sweeping cobwebs down from the ceiling and walls,
etc. Volunteers to commit to a 2 ½ hour seasonal shift at the park. Advertising: A group of talented writers are needed to create brochures for the Historic Park and each of the buildings. These brochures to be placed in each of the buildings and with the Chamber of Commerce. Communications: Writing weekly newspaper articles are for the purpose of promoting the Park, donations and new membership. These weekly articles to be placed in the two village papers sharing some bit of history from information already recorded in books or from stories sought out and recorded as told by our own citizenry who still remember the stories. These articles will also inform the public what we are doing , who has made a donation (only with their permission to advertise their name and the donation made)and to ask the public for anything we may still need for furnishing the buildings. The purpose is to get the people involved and to MAKE HISTORY COME ALIVE! Volunteer Responsibilities:
All volunteers must be current members of the Friends of the Historic
Park and undergo an orientation of the building histories when joining
a committee. The number of shifts and shift hours required of committee
members varies depending on the committee. Committee members are required
to secure their own replacement in the event they cannot perform their
shift. If they cannot find a replacement they must call their chairperson.
