Water Street Replacement Project 2027-2028

Water Street, also known as Highways 60 and 78, is a state highway under the jurisdiction of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). It is not the Villages’ call as to when the highway gets the reconstruction that it needs. WisDOT makes that call and is responsible for funding much of the work. WisDOT is currently in the design phase for work on the roadway targeting construction for 2027 in the Village of Sauk City and 2028 in the Village of Prairie du Sac. The work would be from U.S. Highway 12 in Sauk City to Eagle View Court in Prairie du Sac.

According to WisDOT, the proposed project is a pavement replacement. The purpose of this project is to replace the deteriorating asphalt surface on WIS 60 and WIS 78. The existing pavement is experiencing thermal and fatigue cracking and has a poor ride quality. In addition, there are a few stretches of long spacing between storm sewer inlets, as well as curb ramps in the project area that are not up to current ADA standards. The existing pavement will be removed and replaced with HMA pavement. WisDOT is also planning for the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Water Street and Prairie Street. The intended detour is 188 and there will be a permanent traffic signal at 188/12 in 2026.

WisDOT will consider holding a meeting with the businesses along the project in the future. In the meantime, WisDOT suggests businesses review the "In This Together" program which can be found on the project website which can be accessed by clicking here.
